In the categories Movies, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin led all nominees with eight, including Best Picture – Musical or Comedy. Its stars Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan all received nods, while McDonagh also picked up Best Director and Best Screenplay nominations.

Spielberg is also up for Best Director, as is McDonagh (Banshees), Kwan and Scheinert (Everywhere), James Cameron (Avatar) and Bay Luhrmann (Elvis).

However, the film’s most notable nominee was probably Brendan Fraser, who is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role in The whale. Fraser has a controversial history with the Globes, claiming that in 2003 Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Philip Berk groped him (Berk denied the allegation). Fraser, who is being heralded as an awards season favorite for his performance in The whalepreviously said he would not attend the Golden Globes if nominated.

In the television world, this year’s top nominee was ABC’s hit sitcom, Elementary Abbotwhich won five, including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy (it will compete with the bear, hacks, Only murders in the buildingand Wednesday). Star and creator Quinta Brunson picked up a nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy while supporting players Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tyler James Williams are also up for acting awards.

And in the TV series category, The crown cleaned up with four nominations, including Best TV Series – Drama (it will compete against You better call Saul, dragon house, ozarkand Breakup). Stars Imelda Staunton, Elizabeth Debicki and Jonathan Pryce also picked up acting nominations.

The The Golden Globes will return on January 10, 2023, with comedian Jerrod Carmichael as host. Last year, the show was banned from television after NBC refused to air the Globes following an investigation into the awards’ voting body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

While the HFPA has been the subject of much criticism over the years, including allegations of corruption, this was a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigating the HFPA’s striking lack of diversity — including the fact that it had no black members — that prompted NBC to drop out of the Globes. (Tom Cruise even returned three of his awards as part of the backlash.)
