Although it was officially dropped from the release schedule in 2019, the long-running project Gambit The film starring Channing Tatum is one of those projects that still generates a lot of interest among fans. Although the film fell victim to Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox a few years ago, details of the scrapped project continue to emerge and now it includes recently emerged mood boards from the storyboard artist. Anthony Winn. In a series of images shared by Winn on ArtStation, we see some of the moments that may have factored into the film.
There are four images in total and they show Gambit sitting alone in the back of a truck next to a small house – presumably his own – holding a bottle of bourbon. As he holds the bottle, something prompts his powers to kick in, causing the bottle to activate, then prompting Gambit to throw the bottle away where it explodes. You can check out the panels for yourself here.
What would be Gambit were around?
We don’t know exactly what Gambit would have been, but the film’s screenwriter, Reid Carolin, previously described the film as a “mutant Goodfellas” if Disney hadn’t scrapped it.
Talk with The reading listCarolin called the script one of her favorites and went on to elaborate on the film’s New Orleans as a “city of mutants who didn’t care about saving the world”.
“We created this world in New Orleans which was a city of mutants who didn’t care about saving the world,” Carolin said. “They went there so they could use their powers to party and connect, and their hands could fry grease at McDonald’s and whatever and the hardest thing for them was to fall in love. because they could read each other’s minds, or when they were fighting, they could turn a table into a grenade and send their partner to the hospital or whatever. So it was all that kind of fighting and low-level mutant disagreements, and we sit in this mafia world – almost a bit like a mutant Freedmen in New Orleans.”
How far was Gambit be done?
Carolin also said the film was only months away from filming when it was dropped by Disney and in previous comments to The varietyhe revealed how close it all was.
“We were right on the one-yard line,” Carolin said. “We had chosen the film. We had opened a production office. We were on our way to shoot in New Orleans.”
While the Gambit The film appears to be something Disney has given up on, especially with Marvel now back in control of the rights to the X-Men, Carolin said he hopes the project could still return in the future – and that he thinks always Tatum is perfect for the title role.
“These Marvel guys have a really good thing going on and I’m sure they have a plan that I don’t know about for the X-Men universe and I’m not going to tell them how to do their job, they’ll nail it,” he said. “But hopefully maybe it will come back one day – Channing is perfect for the role. And as long as they continue to make Deadpool a character, he’s going to need a world to play in…if they want to play. ‘other characters like that, I think [they should] come our way.”
