Actress Constance Wu has opened up about sexual assault early in her career, alleging she was raped while acknowledging that “it wasn’t violent”.
In an excerpt from Wu’s upcoming memoir “Making a Scene” published by Vanity Fair, the 40-year-old actress describes a date she had with a man named Ty.
Although he didn’t appear threatening, Wu said Ty caused a “warning twinge in [her] gut” which she ignored after agreeing to go to his house after dinner.
However, once Wu told Ty that she wasn’t ready to go any further after the two got intimate, he ignored her. The ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ actress recalled feeling unable to defend herself.

“While he was soft now, if I fought him, there was a risk he would get angry or violent,” Wu wrote.
The ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ star said she didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation until years later, after filming ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ in 2018.
The achievement “hit [her] like a flood” after waking up from a nap, the actress claims.

Wu said that while people could tell she should have defended herself, she didn’t regret her reaction.
“But if I could turn back time, I wouldn’t change the way I reacted that night,” she wrote. “Because when I think about the girl I was then, I understand what she was going through.”

“She wasn’t ready yet for the insults and derision that follow when women make a scene. And I wouldn’t make her do anything until she was ready,” the Golden Globe nominee concluded.
The evening incident was not the first time Wu had suffered unwanted sexual attention. During a panel, the actress recalled enduring ‘traumatic’ harassment on the ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ set, but said she stayed quiet to avoid attracting negative attention .

“I kept my mouth shut for a very long time about a lot of sexual harassment and bullying that I experienced during the first two seasons of the show,” she said. “I was like, ‘You know what? I handled this, nobody has to know about it, I don’t have to tarnish the reputation of this Asian American producer, I don’t have to tarnish the reputation of the series.'”

Wu previously recalled that she attempted suicide after facing backlash for a negative tweet she made about the renewal of “Fresh Off The Boat” in 2019. The actress then disappeared from social media.
“Looking back, it’s surreal that a few DMs convinced me to end my life, but that’s what happened,” Wu wrote on Twitter in July. “Luckily a friend found me and took me to the ER.”
