The nominations for the 2023 Golden Globes were announced Monday morning.
NBC’s Mayan Lopez and Selenis Leyva Lopez vs. Lopezrevealed the nominees in the Beverly Hilton Film and Live TV categories, with some categories airing during a segment on NBC Today.
The upcoming 80th annual Golden Globes are set to return to NBC in January. The network, which has been broadcasting the Globes since 1996, refused to air the 79th annual awards show earlier this year following an entertainment industry boycott triggered in February 2021. Los Angeles Times briefings that revealed that the Golden Globes organization, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, had no black members and had engaged in unethical conduct and questionable financial practices.
In the wake of the Los Angeles Time articles, the HFPA implemented many reforms, including prohibiting members from accepting gifts and introducing a hotline to report misconduct. It also added 103 international voters and 21 additional members, who are US-based journalists working for overseas media. The HFPA, which was acquired by Eldridge Industries and transformed into a for-profit entity, now has a voting pool of 52% women and 51.5% racial and ethnic diversity.
“It’s really not the old HFPA anymore,” said the organization’s president, Helen Hoehne. The Hollywood Reporter. “Over the past 18 months – almost two years now – we’ve taken a deep look at ourselves and listened to criticism. … And we’ve built a new infrastructure that has transformed our organization and the awards into something more diverse, transparent and responsive.
Additionally, the HFPA created more categories by dividing its Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress honors into separate awards for Ongoing TV Series and Limited/Anthology Series or TV Movies. Previously, supporting acting TV categories included contestants from ongoing TV series, limited series, and TV movies.
Movies and TV shows released in calendar year 2022 are eligible for the awards.
The 2023 Golden Globes, hosted by Jerrod Carmichael, will air live from the Beverly Hilton on Tuesday, January 10 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on NBC and Peacock.
As the Globes returns to NBC, this is the final year of their deal with the network, which means it remains unclear where future editions of the awards show will air. While the Globes normally take place on a Sunday, conflicts with New Year’s Day, the last day of the NFL regular season and the Critics Choice Awards have pushed it back to a Tuesday.
The show is produced by Dick Clark Productions and Jesse Collins Entertainment in association with the HFPA.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which presents the Golden Globes, is owned by Eldridge Industries. The Hollywood Reporter is owned by PME Holdings, LLC, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge.
