A restaurant in downtown Sacramento won one of the highest accolades from the Michelin Guide and the culinary scene on Monday.
At the 2022 Michelin Guide Awards Ceremony, Localis, located on 21st and S Streets, was awarded a star. This rating is given to “restaurants offering exceptional cuisine”, according to the Michelin Guide. The highest rating is out of three stars.
“Visit Sacramento led the effort to get Michelin to get its inspectors to examine Sacramento restaurants, in an effort to brine [sic] more attention to the city’s bustling culinary scene, starting in 2019,” read a statement from Visit Sacramento, the city’s tourism board.
Localis, owned and run by Chef Chris Barnum-Dann, offers a choice of seven or 12 dishes from its tasting menu.
The Kitchen, another high-end restaurant in Sacramento, also retained its star that it earned in 2019.
A total of 18 new restaurants across California have been awarded Michelin star status, with one earning a three-star rating: Addison in San Diego.
“California’s world-class chefs and restaurants are a true testament to our state’s diverse and creative culinary scene,” Visit California President and CEO Caroline Beteta said in a statement. “From three-star restaurants to hole-in-the-wall taco shops, California cuisine is fueled by an abundance of freshness and a fearless thirst to explore our state’s diversity. The recognition and respect that comes with recognition from the MICHELIN Guide is an unparalleled honor in the restaurant world, and every chef and restaurateur included in the California Guide should be proud to fuel the passions of Californians and visitors.”
The ceremony took place at the Petersen Automative Museum in Los Angeles.

“California is a foodie’s dream come true,” Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides, said in a statement. “There are now 142 three-Michelin-star restaurants around the world, with the addition of the spectacular Addison. This is truly a historic achievement for the Addison team, and they have much to be proud of.”
