Hit! This week, a unionized group of post-production workers in Saturday Night Live authorized a strike in an attempt to speed up negotiations on their first contract, which they say has stalled. This group, which unionized last year with the IATSE-affiliated Motion Picture Editors Guild, is responsible for post-production of pre-recorded sketches, such as music videos and commercial parodies. Permission has yet to become an actual strike, so it will be curious to see if the show relies on any pre-tapes they kept in their back pocket, or how episodes will be structured with this strike. imminent. But the show, as they say, must go on.
This week’s episode is hosted by Michael B. Jordan, who cut his teeth on television before breaking out in Hollywood. He is today the heir to the legendary Rocky franchise; Creed IIIwhich he also directed, comes out in March.
Rosalind O’Connor/NBC Lil Baby, Michael B. Jordan and Heidi Gardner on ‘SNL’
I am joined this evening by old SNL cast member, Denny Dillon, who – like Jordan – has oscillated between movies, traditional TV and HBO over the years. She is currently co-starring in M. Night Shyamalan’s Servantbroadcast on Apple TV and starring Lauren Ambrose (Six feet Under ground).
Dillon says, “Jordan is kind of a superhero performer. Not only did he create superheroes like Kilmonger in Black Panther and wakanda forever, but also in animation. The same gravitas he brings to the screen that he has in his voice.”
She adds, “As a quarterback on Friday night lights, I felt his heart and his strength. Having HBO at the start of my television experience – six years later Dream – I was a fan of Thread. Jordan brought vulnerability to his role as a drug dealer. Not an easy feat. It is compelling and versatile. It moves effortlessly between movies, network and streaming. I can’t wait to see him do comedy.”
SNL Review hive – get up!
Open cold
A new sheriff is in town: Merrick Garland (Mikey Day). He prosecuted the January 6 insurgents and now he is investigating the Joe Biden and Donald Trump classified document scandals. “Merrick Garland is not playing! Day said in a nasal groan. He plays on the Attorney General’s silly librarian assignments, punctuating his assertions with a whiplash. Kenan Thompson, Bowen Yang and Ego Nwodim play special agents assisting the case. Yang’s character humbly brags about having met Barack Obama – and does a solid Lin-Manuel Miranda impression. This is the culmination of the cold open! “F around and find out!”
The skit ends with a touching moment referencing the release of new videos from Memphis that revealed police brutally attacking Tire Nichols.
Honestly, this might be one of the strongest cold openers I’ve seen this season.
Monologue
“Tonight, Michael B. hosts, Michael B. jokes…Michael B. vulnerable!”
The host is referring to a pre-tape he shot this week, which was in the same location as one of his first acting jobs on All my children! He talks about a recent breakup and a photo of him that has gone viral. Not ideal, but thankfully the iconic crying Michael Jordan meme replaces any search for “sad” images next to the actor’s name on Google.
Chloe Fineman comes out to flirt with Jordan, and Heidi Gardner and Ego Nwodim also join. The latter has just put on a wedding dress! Punkie Johnson says she “is curious” when the actor points out that he thought she was gay. “Even vegans have cheat days, right?” she jokes.
Jordan says he can take himself too seriously, so he can’t wait to try live comedy. Compared to traditional television or even film and streaming productions, Dillon notes: “Saturday Night Live is another type of epic beast. Being funny with live electricity requires extraordinary powers. Jordan showed us he had them. I started my television career with SNL and I’m forever grateful for the dip in the volcano. It demands danger in a performer, a wild and risky game like Aubrey Plaza caused a stir last week.”
Hello today
Chloe Fineman and Kenan Thompson present the “Cuisine With Francine” segment. Sarah Sherman plays Francine, who missed yesterday’s show after getting caught up in a roller coaster for 19 hours. Now she looks crazy with her face paralyzed after hours of being scorched by the wind.
Placing this segment at the top of the show is a signal of the show’s faith in Sherman’s brand of comedy. She is able to make grotesque body humor charming and appealing. Indeed, his Francine is an impressive display of physical comedy. She is joined by Jason (Jordan) who was also on the roller coaster. Funny ending.
South West Airlines
Southwest canceled more than 16,700 flights over several days in late December. While a huge winter storm caused the initial cancellations, the company’s outdated software systems turned what should have been a normal problem into a disaster. Now the airline is trying to make amends.
The Towel Guys
It’s a fun showcase for Marcello Hernandez, who is joined by Kenan Thompson as two towel guys at a Punta Cana resort. Almost like a passing of the torch. They are visited by various guests. Check this out if you want to see Marcello center stage; it’s really built around his comedic energy. Michael Longfellow is also funny as an awkward guest from New Jersey. This could be a fun recurring sketch!
state farm
Jordan plays Jake from State Farm, who slowly usurps a man’s family. Mikey Day plays the cuckolded husband who slowly realizes his wife’s betrayal and goes crazy. I love that this becomes a horror movie trailer. Really fun twist with Andrew Dismukes. “He’s not a good neighbor!”
Street Fighter voiceover
Jordan and Bowen Yang record the grunts and sound effects needed for fighting video games. While Jordan is solid, Yang’s stupid holds lead him astray. We have seen this before.
Lil Baby – “California Breeze”
This was included on Baby’s third studio album It is only me, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, the album’s highest-charting song. Solid and sincere melody I guess but it’s not for me.
weekend update
Colin Jost compared Donald Trump’s Facebook reinstatement “with safeguards” to the reopening of Jurassic Park, while Michael Che compared Taylor Swift fans to the January 6 insurgents.
New York is expected to be the most expensive rental market in the country – Che’s new doorman Carl (Kenan Thompson) is here to comment. “Hey Che,” he stops her, before telling the story of an embarrassing encounter. Six cats are looking for Che!
The Vanilla Frostys are back at Wendy’s! Angel, the girlfriend of every boxing movie (Heidi Gardner) is back to chat. It’s been a minute! I think this is her first appearance on Update since 2018. She begins, as always, frantically talking about her boyfriend’s hopeless addiction to boxing and the health threats it poses. His last fight? Against Creed. Adonis Creed (Jordan) joins her – he wants to take his children to his sister! Cute.
Male Confidence Seminar
Andrew Dismukes plays a variation on Tom Cruise’s Frank TJ Mackey character in Magnolia, an “alpha” giving sad men tips for talking to women. He’s got a scarf and rings, the whole package. Well until a worker from Nu Water (Jordan) sat down and laughed at his forehead. The facade melts quickly, as the participants (played by the male actors) follow Jordan.
Bachelorette party in Palm Springs
Vince (Jordan), a firefighter (stripper), joins a group for a fun night of debauchery. However, his wife (Gardner) shows up, causing the buzz to explode. Hijinks ensue. It’s a fun sidekick to the male confidence skit – this time Jordan joins the female cast members. A reversal! “Push, push, push!”
Lil Baby – “Forever”
This was produced by Fridayy, Business Boi & Fortune. It’s a beautiful love song; It is more or less that!
Toyota Advertising
Andrew Dismukes and James Austin Johnson are the King brothers – it’s a good time to recognize the versatility of these two actors. Off highway 8 exit 260! But there’s a problem with the left lane. It’s the Overstock Sell-a-thon! They hate trendy chains that encroach on their turf and have a lot of animosity against Raising Canes. Johnson’s daughter says their plight is a “fun mirror” reflecting the American Dream.
A side note: this episode keeps reminding us how horny and sexy Michael B. Jordan is.
To fall
Michael B. Jordan continues to fall as the music plays – with Andrew Dismukes as a witness. He falls again and again while walking around 8am. It consumes him. Very silly and weird. The Kyle Mooney 10 to 1 slot machine is being filled.
Final Thoughts
“Well, what did we think of this one?” Vote here or weigh in below.
—Thanks to Denny Dillon! Go watch it in Servant! She shares, “It was a completely different experience for me. I was featured in Stephen King’s the stranger on HBO so I had dipped my toes into the ominous world but M. Night has his own dark signature. Once, while filming in Philadelphia, a crew member remarked, “Denny, you’re really funny. And Lawrence [Ambrose] says “Denny has been funny for a long, long time.” I had my day.”
—Happy 45th birthday to this classic episode!
