Paramount Pictures announced that Tracy Flick can’t win – a sequel to Alexander Payne’s 1999 cult classic comedy Election – is being created for Paramount+. Payne returns as director, with the original film’s lead, Reese Witherspoon, to produce and reprise her starring role.
Based on Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel of the same name, Election watches high school teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) find himself on a collision course with overachieving student politician Tracy Flick (Witherspoon). The satire drawing parallels between the worlds of high school and politics was Payne’s second feature after 1996 Citizen Ruth and proved to be his breakthrough project, earning him and his collaborators three Independent Spirit Awards, a WGA Award and an Oscar nomination, with Witherspoon landing his first Golden Globe nomination.
The Election The sequel is based on a follow-up novel by Perrotta, which was published by Scribner in June. It’s another satirical dark comedy that finds the eponymous Tracy as an adult still struggling to make her way to the top. Payne is again adapting the screenplay with Jim Taylor. Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter will produce the film for Hello Sunshine, a Candle Media company, alongside Bona Fide Productions’ Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa (Election), with Perrotta serving as executive producer.
In addition to Citizen Ruth and ElectionPayne has previously directed the Oscar-winning feature films Next to and The descendantsas well as Oscar-nominated films About Schmidt and NebraskaMatt Damon’s 2017 comedy Downsizing and other projects. Witherspoon currently stars alongside Jennifer Aniston in the Apple TV+ series The morning showhaving also recently appeared in series like Small fires everywhere and big little liesand movies like A shortcut in time. She exec produces The morning show and also recently produced the features Where the Crawdads sing and Something from Tiffany’samong many other projects.
Perrotta is a bestseller whose novel Small children was also adapted into an Oscar-nominated film. He is perhaps best known for his novels. Leftovers and Mrs Fletcherboth of which have been adapted into critically acclaimed series for HBO.
Taylor is a longtime Payne collaborator who previously collaborated with him on the writing of Citizen Ruth, Election, About Schmidt, Next to (which won both an Oscar) and Downsizing. Additional writer credits include Juliet, nude and I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry.
