Few talents in recent memory have had the reach and impact of Megan Thee Stallion on the collective cultural landscape. This is why she is one of the few celebrities and personalities who can be both a host and a musical guest on saturday night live. Not to mention that she delivered a superb album in August of this year with Traumazine.

Endowed with a natural charm and a contagious charisma, she is the perfect host to bring your eyes back to SNL. Her hosting duties already made headlines when it was revealed her Los Angeles home had been broken into while she was getting ready this week, and she has already announced that she will be taking a well-deserved break afterwards. its hosting functions. Let’s dive into the best (and most) of this week’s episode.

Best sketch of the evening

Hot Girl Hospital – SNL

SNL is at its best when it understands the host and can create content that matches their skills and unique personality. This understanding was best captured in “Hot Girl Hospital,” combining Megan Thee Stallion’s nursing degree and her hot girl brand. Joined by Punkie Johnson and Ego Nwodim, Megan Thee Stallion’s hospital for “bad bitches” was a skit that really could only be done with her as the host. The New York Times quote, “Somehow thought-provoking and regressive at the same time,” was the perfect summary of a tongue-in-cheek skit.

Most relevant sketch

We Were Brought In – SNL

“We Got Bringed” was one of those universal SNL sketches that capture the anxieties of social gatherings. With Bowen Yang, Nwodim and Megan Thee Stallion as more than a trio of old friends, forced conversations and awkward silences created a perfectly calibrated gritty comedy. Structuring the skit as a music video was perfect for Megan Thee Stallion. The highlight of the sketch was really its forceful exit line about going to the bathroom to escape those two strangers.

Most moving moment

Megan Thee Stallion: Anxiety (Live) – SNL

You don’t expect too many serious moments during SNL. However, during her performance of “Anxiety,” Megan Thee Stallion seemed overwhelmed with emotion. The performance was straightforward with a strong point of view, but her visible emotion reflected the authenticity she exudes that has earned her such a large and devoted fanbase. It’s worth pressing play.

Worst technical direction

Workout Classes – SNL

The premise of “Workout Class” is promising. Channeling the unique, confident energy of Megan Thee Stallion into an exercise instructor unlike Heidi Gardner and Chloe Fineman as assistant instructors focused on maintaining a flat glute works well in theory. It was strange technical decisions and misfires that hampered the sketch. The awkward transitions between shots only seemed to highlight the weird blocking of the scene. There were three focal points throughout the scene that felt oddly siphoned off from each other. Megan and Yang seemed to be breaking during the scene, which can always be fun on SNLbut the confusing geography of the scene created a disconnect.

MVP of the week

Classroom – SNL

Although she’s always been great on the show, Nwodim really got a chance to shine in this episode. She was excellent at everything and appeared in most of the sketches of the night. Her delivery of “they can” in “Girl Talk” was particularly hilarious, but it was “Classroom” that really showcased Nwodim’s unique talents. Riffing movies like dangerous spirits Where Freedom Writers, Nwodim steps in as a substitute teacher with faulty assumptions and expectations. The way she tries to save face as a jerk in the skit is precision comedy.

Lost observations

  • The cold open was really bland. It would be great if they went wild with political comedy. We always have the impression that they are a little too tied to the reality of the situation.
  • It would have been great if Cecily Strong had been available for the Hocus Pocus mom section. It looks like its wheelhouse.
  • The Dunder Mifflin sweatshirt was the highlight of “Women’s Charity”.
  • “Deer” was one of those SNL sketches that ends up winning you over with its stupidity.
