Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have been one of Hollywood’s “it” couples for years, in part because of how normal they look, despite their incredibly glamorous lives.
Rather than cultivating the usual celebrity distance, the couple’s self-deprecating jokes and constant Instagram pranks have become something of a pop culture institution.
And each new iteration is always greeted by a resounding chorus of fans declaring their marriage “relationship goals.”
But their shtick has started to wear down a bit for some fans, who are starting to feel like it’s all an act – and one that has long since worn out its welcome.
In a recent thread on the “r/popculturechat” sub-Reddit, a fan bluntly asked, “Why do people like Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively?”
And the responses show that many pop culture vultures have had enough of Hollywood’s goofiest couple.
Fans started to express their negative feelings about Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds.
Many fans aren’t buying Reynolds and Lively’s “perfect” wedding, thinking it’s just another Hollywood publicity stunt.
It’s easy to forget in the face of celebrities’ carefully crafted public personas that they are, ultimately, billionaire celebrities whose lives are nothing like that of a normal person.
In the case of Reynolds and Lively, a lot of people feel like they’re going a bit too far.
One Redditor called the pair “fabricated”, while another called their “so quirky lol character” a calculated gesture conjured up by their PR team.
A TikTok user had a similar opinion, arguing that the constant hitting on each other is just a modern iteration of “ball and chain” culture.
Another commenter on Reddit said the more the couple “try to put the perfect narrative of marriage/relationship goals online, the less I believe them.”
Fans are sick of Reynolds and Lively’s constant trolling.
Reynolds and Lively’s constant trolls on social media have become an institution among fans.
Fans seem to be particularly fond of Lively’s annual birthday roast of Reynolds, like the one below in 2019 where he posted a series of unflattering photos of his wife.
But for some fans, the act got very old, very quickly. One Redditor called Reynolds’ whole style “too cringeworthy for me,” while another pointed out that his jokes are all the same, including in his movies.
The user wrote, “His humor gets very stale once you realize he cracks jokes the same way all the time.”
“He says something funny with a very straight face and then keeps staring at the person he’s saying it to.”
Another wrote that while they love Lively, they ‘can’t stand it’, and are particularly irritated that Reynolds is trolling his wife, which they say ‘seems to be trying hard’.
One Redditor agreed wholeheartedly, calling Reynolds’ trolls of Lively, like a 2017 birthday post in which he cropped Lively entirely from a photo, “really old.”
And then they made a most unfavorable comparison to Reynolds’ comedic styles – “It’s kind of cringe to me as a kind of boomer humor.”
Ouch. Hard, but fair.
Yet for every person who seems to hate Reynolds and Lively, there’s another who loves them and isn’t “getting the intense hate,” as one Redditor put it.
Ultimately, Reynolds and Lively’s social media depiction of a picture-perfect and hilarious celebrity wedding isn’t hurting anyone.
But after years and years of public performances, it’s hard not to see a little.
