Prince Harry and Meghan Markle learned they were ‘not invited’ to a state reception for world leaders and foreign royals after reading press reports, multiple sources have said at Page Six.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who joined the Royal Family last week to mourn Queen Elizabeth II in London, have received an invitation for the event which is due to take place on Sunday evening, we are told.
However, a spokesperson for King Charles III confirms to Page Six that “the invitation is restricted to serving members of the Royal Family.”
“Harry and Meghan actually got the invite and no one told them they weren’t invited,” a royal source told Us.
Another palace insider adds: “I was told they only found out they weren’t invited by reading press reports.”
President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are among heads of state expected to attend the reception, hosted by Charles and Queen Consort Camilla ahead of the Queen’s funeral on Monday.
Guests will also be greeted by the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Princess Royal and the Earl and Countess of Wessex at Buckingham Palace Reception.
Amid the confusion, Harry will join his brother Prince William and their cousins on Saturday evening to hold a vigil for the monarch, who is in state at Westminster Hall. The king and his siblings kept vigil on Friday evening.
Throughout the week, sources close to the Sussexes were keen to stress that the couple would do whatever is asked of them.
Harry – who was stripped of his military titles when he and Markle stepped down from royal duties in January 2020 – was prepared not to wear his uniform to any event, but after a U-turn from Buckingham Palace, the former Army officer will wear his uniform during a vigil on Saturday.
At the time, a source told us, “Prince Harry was just ready to wear whatever his grandmother had planned. He focuses on his honor and that’s it.
Queen Elizabeth II died aged 96 on September 8. His funeral will take place on Monday.
