Shania Twain has revealed she once had a very awkward moment with talk show icon Oprah Winfrey over dinner when the conversation turned to religion.
The 57-year-old country singer sat down for a podcast interview on Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware to promote the latest single Waking Up Dreaming, and revealed how things quickly turned sour with Oprah, 68.
As she explained that it was “one of my most memorable dinners” with Oprah, which took place at a restaurant, Shania recalled how she could sense disagreement between them over their religious beliefs.
“It was great to have real discussions, but as soon as we started talking about religion, everything went wrong,” Shania confessed.
Shania Twain’s latest single, Waking Up Dreaming, was released earlier this month. And during her promotional tour for the song, the country singer sat down for a podcast interview on Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware.
“So I said, ‘Let’s stop talking about religion,'” Twin recalled, while adding that Oprah — who grew up in the Baptist Church and is a Christian — “is pretty religious.”
The country singer called Oprah a “smart woman.”
She clarified her position on the subject, noting that she is “not religious in the sense that I am dedicated to a religion.” I am much more of a spiritual person. I would say that I am a researcher.
Shania, who was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, further hinted at how awkward things had gotten between her and Oprah, pointing out that she likes to debate things.
She added: “There was no room for debate and I like to debate. Canadians like to debate everything. So I’m like, “Oh, okay. It’s time to change the subject.”
The singer explained that over dinner, the star was open to having a conversation about their religious differences, but said “it’s just not arguable” and didn’t elaborate.
During the podcast, the star repeated the line: “Everyone always says ‘Never talk about politics or religion’.
Oprah has previously been candid about her religious background, describing herself as “spiritual” in a 2015 interview with AARP Bulletin, while noting that she was “born in the church.”

“I was always spiritual, raised by my grandmother on that little acre in Mississippi, indoctrinated, born into the church and into the ways of the church,” she said at the time.
The TV host went into more detail that she “grew up in the Baptist church” and remembered a time when – at the age of eight – she “spent days in agony… [over] if she was really ready to renounce sin”.

She noted that she does not consider herself a “traditionalist” when it comes to religion, despite praying every night, as she does not attend church every Sunday.
And while her conversation with Shania took a turn for the ‘sour’ religion debate, Oprah said at the time of her AARP interview that she sees herself as ‘inclusive’ for everyone, regardless of religion. in which they believed.
“For me to live in a world that doesn’t include other people who aren’t Christian would be the opposite of Christianity,” she said.
