‘Christmas Carol’ adaptations glorify ‘cruel corporate czar’, claims NBC News critic

NBC News culture critic Ani Bundel on Saturday slammed movies like “Spirited” and “Scrooge: A Christmas Carol” for glamorizing the “cruel corporate czar.”

“Spirited” and “Scrooge: A Christmas Carol” are musical adaptations of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. Bundel wrote that both adaptations “hit the wrong key”.

“But the insistence of both renditions on preaching this age-old billionaire-turned-benefactor myth at a time when the news is replete with stories to the contrary means that both musical adaptations hit the wrong key,” she wrote.

Bundel suggests in his review of the films that neither version wants to admit that the “cruel corporate czar” or Scrooge’s character is a “bad person”.

‘A CHRISTMAS STORY’ OHIO HOUSE LISTED JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS: ‘DEFINITELY EXCITING’

“In a year when it seems almost every monopolistic company is laying off workers, the cathartic reward of a hard-hearted billionaire makes cultural sense. But neither film is even willing to admit that its cruel Corporate czar is a bad person, as if producers are afraid to insult the rich men who run their respective streaming services,” the critic wrote to NBC News.

Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, Octavia Spencer and more stars in ‘Spirited’ on Apple TV+. Ferrell plays the ghost of the Christmas present and Reynolds portrays Clint Briggs, a reimagined Ebenezer Scrooge.

NBC’s Bundel also argued that the entertainment industry’s failure to recognize “societal change” was “more troubling.”

“More troubling is the entertainment world’s refusal to notice societal change. Dickens’ story is timeless for a reason, and there should be room right now to make a version of it that speaks to the current moment. Too bad let none of these know how.” Bundel continued.

Spencer opened up about preparing for the musical in November.

“I had no idea what it took to make a musical, because here’s the thing, we sing every day,” she said. “I don’t consider myself a singer, but I thought I could probably do it, because when you sing along to the radio, you sound so good, don’t you? You hit the notes, but you realize you’re singing very low. They were going to have a microphone, so I thought I could use my little radio singing voice… and vocal coach Eric Vetro said, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna need you to sing – project!'”

Reynolds said earlier this year that he and the actors went to a seven-week acting camp to prepare for the musical.
