‘SNL’: ‘Top Gun’ star Miles Teller hosts season 48 premiere and mercilessly mocks the cold

“Saturday Night Live” opened its first season 48 with “Top Gun: Maverick” star Miles Teller playing Peyton Manning commenting on (and ruthlessly mocking) the cold open in a very self-aware cold open – in a cold open – if that makes sense.

The fake Peyton described her ‘Monday Night Football’ show with her brother Eli Manning (cast member Andrew Dismukes) as their ‘Manningcast where we analyze live what’s already being played on TV’.

Teller said they would watch the first cold-open skit of the season to see what the cast and writers spent “all summer coming up with.”

“Oh, good Trump skit. Way to mix it all up,” Teller said sarcastically as the cast members acted out a scene set at Mar-a-Lago.

“I have to mention, where is the political balance?” Teller complained about a football review after a cast member made a joke about explorer Christopher Columbus. “They’re making Trump-Columbus jokes, while Biden lost his fucking marbles.”

The co-hosts went on to slam the cast members’ performances in the skit, highlighting the four new comedians in light of the drastic changes to the lineup since last season.

Veterans Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor, Aristotle Athari and Chris Redd all left at the end of last season.

New cast members are Ola Marcello Hernández, Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker.

“The new guy just freaks out, he just stares at the camera,” Dismukes as Eli said of Longfellow after saying he forgot to close the door after his little part in the sketch. “That might be the only time we’ll see him tonight.”

The series often pokes fun at itself that some new cast members are underutilized.

They also touched on the departure of print wizard McKinnon when Teller suggested the sketch should have more “fun” prints like Anthony Fauci, Rudy Giuliani and Lindsey Graham – all of whom were McKinnon.

The pair then looked at the skit’s “stats”, noting that out of 14 attempted jokes, there was only “one slight laugh and two laughs”.

“Thank God they have [musical guest] Kendrick Lamar because that’s the only reason everyone tunes in.”

‘Top Gun’ star Jon Hamm made a surprise appearance in the skit, saying ‘I don’t know but it’s not comedy’ when Teller asked him to comment on what he was seeing in the sketch.

Olympic snowboarder Shawn White also made a random surprise appearance as former President Trump’s special handler for his investigation of Mar-a-Lago FBI Judge Raymond Dearie, who Teller called a “cast of desperate stunts.” “.

Hamm threw shade at Teller by saying that sometimes “SNL” will bring in real celebrities when the party’s host isn’t famous enough.

“I mean, when they couldn’t have the star of the big summer movie: your Tom Cruise or your Jon Hamm, they had to have the co-star,” Hamm deadpanned Teller about why he and White had been brought.

Teller indignantly replied, “Well, I hear they rarely put hosts down, so when they do, it’s special.”

” Special ? Or is it hopeless? Hamm replied

Later, in his monologue, Teller remarked on how much he actually loved “Saturday Night Live”. It’s pretty standard for hosts to say, but in Teller’s case, he brought receipts.

He said his mother, who was in the audience, found an old VHS tape of his sister and him re-enacting an old Spartan “SNL” cheerleader skit from the mid-’90s made famous by former members of the cast Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri.

He said that alongside his sister, he was cast as Cheri Oteri “because I had the frame for it” before showing the very real, very homemade tape.

He added, “Is that crazy? My parents used to watch me do sketches in my living room and now they’re watching me host ‘Saturday Night Live!'”
