SNL mocks try guys and Ned Fulmer, but causes controversy

If you’ve been on the internet in the past couple of weeks, you probably know that Ned Fulmer quit the Try Guys after it emerged he was cheating on his wife with a co-worker.

This came as a huge surprise to fans because, after all, Fulmer was known as a wife and Try Wife Ariel featured regularly in the group’s content.

They even wrote The Date Night Cookbook together, and having relationship stuff figured out was just part of their brand.

But when photos showed Ned kissing video producer Alexandria Herring in a New York bar, it quickly became the only thing anyone on Twitter or TikTok wanted to talk about.

TRY GUYS NED CHEATING HIS WIFE W FOOD BABIES ALEX ???? NED “I LOVE MY WIFE” FULMER CHEATED ON HIS WIFE ????

Fulmer, Eugene Lee Yang, Zach Kornfeld, and Keith Habersberger created the Try Guys while working at BuzzFeed in 2014. (They left and started their own production company in 2019, in which BuzzFeed Inc. owns a financial stake .)

The most ironic part of the Ned Fulmer/Try Guys drama is that someone from Buzzfeed is going to write an article about it.

Obviously, this was a big story for BuzzFeed News; Internet culture is an essential part of what we write about.

twitter confirmed that “try guys” is the no. 1 trending topic in the US, followed by “ariel” – here’s the explanation: https://t.co/IXloAwWeIU

Brendan Gleeson, this week’s host, delivers the latest news of the Try Guys’ response with the gravity of a White House correspondent.

Ego Nwodim replaces anyone who was utterly perplexed by the scandal and the hold he suddenly had on people. “What’s a Try Guy?” she asks.

Bowen Yang, in particular, captures the intensity that the real-life Try Guys had brought to the situation.

But for some people, the jokes missed a critical point – that Fulmer didn’t just cheat, he cheated someone he worked with who had less power than him.

if anything, can we PLEASE stop downplaying it as just a cheating scandal. ned fulmer was his BOSS. it was a power imbalance, and companies like SNL only twist the narrative for laughs. it’s just dumb and unfair to other guys trying while they fight

this sketch of the tryout guys was so tasteless… saying they were overreacting for firing Ned when it’s so rare for men to face the consequences of their actions in the entertainment industry #snl

Twitter: @tgkooist

Other people were annoyed that Ned – the person who had done something worth apologizing for – hadn’t laughed at him.

hate that they care enough to find and buy zach’s exact shirt but not enough to do basic research on why ned should be the butt of their joke not the other guys #tryguys #snl https ://t.co/AN0Chwi8WM

I shouldn’t care so much but snl give it a try guys where they mock NOT Ned but the other three for holding him responsible for all his shit and being hurt by it is so mean as please tell me more how funny you think a man cheating on his wife with his employee is

And some have praised the Try Guys for taking their work environment so seriously.

to be clear, tryouts are probably the only people in the entertainment industry taking action to stop men from using their power inappropriately, and they’re publicly ashamed to talk about their feelings about it. great catch snl https://t.co/PmD3VYz3Tg
