Thursday Grey’s Anatomy not only marked Kate Walsh’s final return as Addison, but also brought Bailey back to Gray Sloan, where the two teamed up with Jo to produce a series of social media videos in which the interns taught sex education. Needless to say, what happened next was more complicated than “Well, when a bird really, really loves a bee…” and if you keep reading, we’ll go over all the details.
“YOU ARE PAID TO TALK ABOUT SEX TODAY” | As “Let’s Talk About Sex” begins, Lucas skateboards to Gray Sloan, Amelia struggles to find a way to see love from a distance Kai, only to find they’re already in Seattle (surprise !), and Zola came to the hospital with Meredith rather than go to school (as the youngster was still having panic attacks). Nearby, Bailey showed up at her old stomping ground, having been allowed by Nick to use the interns in the sex ed project she and Jo had set up following the cancellation of Roe v. Wade. When Addison, in town working with Bailey and Jo, crossed paths with Lucas, she warmly greeted him as Shep…before he quietly clarified that she wasn’t supposed to acknowledge he was Derek’s nephew. From the start, the trainees tried to find excuses not to participate – and that was before they discovered that they would not just be talking to a video camera, they would be talking to a room full of real kids. As the interns bombarded Jo’s script reading, one of the teenage girls ran out of the room and admitted to Addison that she was late. Back in the auditorium, another girl fell over in pain.
As Jules caught the kids’ attention by explaining where the clitoris was and Blue was explaining why the extraction method was so ineffective, girl #2 turned out to have a giant cyst. Called to the operating room, Addison tasked Levi with reassuring Girl No. 1 as she awaited test results. He must therefore have been the person who had confirmed to her that yes, she had become pregnant after the first sexual intercourse. But at least he was able to explain to her that they could give her medical abortion pills as long as they detected the pregnancy early enough. (They had.) Eventually, Jules recruited Owen and Teddy, of all couples, to teach young people about consent. The trainees also taught the kids how different real sex is from porn sex. (Spoiler alert: very.)
“I AM A VERY HAPPY PERSON, HE IS JUST BITTER AND BROKEN” | Although Lucas was supportive of Bailey, Jo, and Addison’s project, he needed more pit time, so he volunteered to help Teddy (especially since Owen was worse than useless to her at the current time). Soon, he was assigned by Levi to help Joyce (aka Simone’s grandmother) find her daughter, who she believed was giving birth that day. (As we already knew, Simone’s mother died in Seattle Grace giving birth to her.) Soon, Joyce said that if her daughter had a daughter, her name would be Simone. Moment of enlightenment for Lucas. Then, in a horrific moment, Simone had to tell her grandmother that her mother had died. Meredith to the rescue. (Well, as much as she could help, without being able to resuscitate Simone’s mother.) Griffith wasn’t sure she could handle her grandmother’s condition. But Gray assured her that since she had to be with Ellis, Griffith could be with her grandmother. After Mer suggested that letting Joyce live in her reality might be the nicer option (instead of telling her over and over again that her daughter is dead), Simone went ahead and played her mother to Joyce. . (Heartbreaking stuff.) Later, Simone thanked Lucas for staying with her grandmother all day and asked him not to tell anyone about her condition. If he could keep his lips shut, Simone added, she wouldn’t reveal he was a shepherd — yes, she figured that out after he was so weird with ‘Aunt Addie’.
“TEN YEARS OF TRAINING, AND I ESSENTIALLY PLAY A VIDEO GAME” | Bored with her homework, Zola snuck out of Mer’s office looking for an operation to watch, but ended up being intercepted by Nick, who showed her some cool gadgets in his lab. Did he always know he wanted to be a doctor? she asked. No, not before his mother died. When Kai arrived, they were impressed with Zola’s cognitive abilities on the neurological tests that were lying around. Nick too, who called Amelia and Maggie to see how brilliant Zola is. When Mer arrived on the scene, checking off that her daughter had taken these tests without her consent, Maggie and Kai suggested that Zola’s genius might be the cause of the panic attacks.
‘WHAT ARE WE INDICATING?’ | As the hour drew to a close, the docs all released dance moves for the sex ed reel. (Joy vet Harry Shum Jr. was, of course, a killer.) When Richard asked Bailey when they would see her again, she suggested…tomorrow. Since there was an ongoing humanitarian crisis, she wanted to reopen the clinic to protect reproductive rights and work as an assistant the rest of the time. “This is my best and last offer,” she said. Natch, Webber accepted it. Zola’s outburst sparked memories in Maggie of her own childhood; she couldn’t believe she hadn’t noticed it in her niece. What had helped Maggie? asked Amelie. A child therapist had given him coping tools. Zola would look for his tools, Amelia promised. Richard invited Addison to dinner, but she wanted to work. After Roe v. Wade, she felt “erased”. He encouraged her to also live and eat. Finally, Mer admitted to Nick that she didn’t know what to do for Zola. He saw the positive side of the day – they now had a piece of the puzzle they hadn’t had before. At home, inspired by their presentation on sex education, Teddy gave Owen consent to get along with her. And at the same time, Amelia and Kai kept busy. (Not all together, mind you.) And as Link massaged Jo’s feet, she shared that she learned that even they had erogenous zones. “Should I stop?” Surely not. At the hospital, Lucas and Simone seemed to become awfully pals, and Blue and Jules snuck into the duty room to have sex. “I don’t even love you,” she said. “I’m not for everyone,” he replied. To like! These! Interns!
