SPOILER ALERT: The following story contains HBO season 2 finale details The White Lotus.
The White Lotus Star Jennifer Coolidge was as surprised as everyone when she learned of Tanya McQuoid’s exit from the hit HBO series.
Her response when creator Mike White first told her of his plans for her heiress character? “What? What? Oh, come on, Mike. Really?”
In a chat with Deadline on Monday, Coolidge shared that White first approached her about returning for Season 2 maybe “a month before he even thought” of a concrete story idea for the new installment. She didn’t know at the time that Tanya would die in the finale, which aired last night, although that revelation comes during a second call while she was in New York filming Ryan’s Netflix series Murphy. The Observer. “He said, ‘Sicily is amazing. That’s where we’re going to film white lotus 2. You’re going to lose your mind, Jennifer. It’s so beautiful here,” she recalls. “And then he goes, ‘Oh yeah, another thing. You will die.'”
Coolidge would have to wait even longer to find out precisely how Tanya meets her end. But while the prospect of going out The White Lotus Still bittersweet for the actress, she also thinks Tanya’s dramatic death makes sense given the “operatic” nature of the show itself and her character’s tendency to be its “worst enemy.”
One of only two originals white lotus characters to return for season 2, Tanya accidentally dies following a clumsy fall from the side of a yacht onto a captive motorboat. She contemplated a jump in panic, after realizing that the group of homosexuals with whom she was vacationing in Italy were going to kill her so that her fortune would fall into the possession of her husband, Greg (Jon Gries).
“I have to say I enjoyed my role,” Coolidge said. “I mean, I know people had high hopes for her when she left with this guy who seemed to really like her ever since. White Lotus 1 after his very sad story of having to bury his mother, without really recovering… But I liked that we started white lotus 2 really thinking cool stuff was going to happen for her… I got a pretty cool role, and… there were so many cool scenes I got to do.
Coolidge’s character gets some form of justice for herself before clumsily dying by her own actions, as she guns down nearly everyone aboard the yacht with the gun meant to end her own life. Coolidge is fairly certain, however, that Greg will get his hands on “all” of Tanya’s money, with Quentin (Tom Hollander) and his friends out of the picture.
She hopes, at the same time, that Greg will get his reward, whether or not she is represented in The White Lotus Season 3. “My hope for Greg is that he ends up in some horrible prison somewhere. I think dying would just be too good, too easy for him,” Coolidge said. he was plotting the murder of this woman. From the very beginning, he saw a woman with a lot of money and wanted to take it from her and take her life. So I think he deserves a terrible fate.
For the uninitiated, The White Lotus is a dark satire that examines the intersecting lives of guests and employees at a series of luxury hotels, as a way to talk about issues of power and sexual politics, among other topics. Coolidge picked up her second consecutive Golden Globe nomination for her role as Tanya this morning, after winning her first Emmy for the role in September. The actress was joined in the category of the Globes for actress in a supporting role in television by Aubrey Plaza, cast member of season 2, with co-star F. Murray Abraham and the show itself also landed names.
White hinted in a brief post-show interview that aired last night that The White LotusThe third season, which will likely be set in Asia, will explore “death in Eastern religion and spirituality.” The show written, directed and produced by White had been picked up for a third round in November.
