“I just feel like I can do any part of life by his side.”
Rihanna has redefined pregnancy style and made us all believe in love again thanks to her romance with A$AP Rocky.
As she prepares to welcome her first child, the Fenty Beauty mogul is sharing more details about her journey toward motherhood, and her relationship, in an extensive new interview with Vogue.
Rihanna and Rocky were first subject to dating speculation mid-way through last year, although they’d known each other for some time before that.
“People don’t get out of the friend zone very easily with me,” Rihanna explained. “And I certainly took a while to get over how much I know him and how much he knows me, because we also know how much trouble we can land each other in.”
The couple’s dynamic changed during the summer of 2020, when Rihanna said they drove from LA to New York in a tour bus together. “He became my family in that time,” she recalled.
“I love the simple things but also the grand adventures … There’s no pretentious my-brand-your-brand bullshit [with Rocky], it’s just us living. I just feel like I can do any part of life by his side.”
Rihanna said “transparency” is “what [she loves] most” about their relationship. “Transparency with everything: how we’re feeling, what our goals are, what our fears and insecurities are. The vulnerability to be able to say what you feel about each other.”
In addition to praising their partnership, Rihanna looked back on their path to parenthood and explained how pregnancy has impacted her for the better.
Apparently, her pregnancy came as a happy surprise! “I don’t know when I ovulate or any of that type of shit. We just had fun. And then it was just there on the test. I didn’t waste any time. I called him inside and showed him. Then I was in the doctor’s office the next morning and our journey began.”
Rihanna noted how expecting a child has encouraged her to “say yes to more” because she knows “it will be different on the other side of this,” after the baby comes. “At first I expected some magical change, but really I remain who I am. None of the dials are turned down.”
“They’re going to teach me more than I could ever teach them,” she continued. “And I want them to go for it. I want to see who they are in the world, who they become. Because I’m just here to keep them on the rails — a passenger as much as the driver.”
As for the sex of her baby, Rihanna says she’s waiting to share that bit with everyone. “When we’re ready to tell the world, we’ll just tell them.”
She also has some pretty specific plans for her baby shower: “No brunch, no blush tones. And no animal-shaped nothing. I mean it’s lit for a lot of people — I’ve even planned a couple of baby showers like that myself — it’s just not right for me. Personally, I want a party. I want everyone to be plastered and crawling out. And it’s got to be co-ed! Don’t put me on no wicker chair somewhere with gifts at my feet where everyone is staring at me.”
When exactly the shower will happen isn’t clear, but I already can’t wait to see photos. You can read the rest of Rihanna’s Vogue interview here.
